my friends look out for me like family.
i have a question for you.
how important are your friends?
simple, right?
i want you to think of who your best friends are, what is their role? how big is the impact and influence they have had upon your life.
do you feel like they have contributed to your life in a positive manner? if so, do you feel obligated to them? do you feel you owe them your respect? do you feel they deserve more than the average?
if i asked you, "would you help your friends in their time of need?"
what would you say?
if i asked you, "would you give them the shirt off your back?"
what would you say?
if i asked you, "would you do whatever it took to help them?"
"would you do whatever it took to ensure their safety?"
"would you do whatever it took to ensure your friendship?"
"would you sacrifice?"
"would you compromise?"
"would you do everything and anything for your friends?"
i dont know you. i only know me. but i know my answer.
how prevalent is the cliche:
i would do ANYTHING for my friends?
on myspace, journals, away messages...
so then why do so many of our friendships fail?
because in our high expectations of everyone else, WE dont live up to our words.
your friendship failed because YOU didnt put forth a little more effort.
your friendship failed because YOU didnt make the attempt to understand a bit more.
your friendship failed because YOU weren't willing to give the shirt off your back.
your friendship failed because YOU weren't willing to tell your FRIEND how you truly felt.
your friendship failed because YOU failed to compromise.
we fail our friends with trite cliches, false confidence and hollow words.
we tell lies with our eyes and insincere brohugs. we fail to be completely honest with the only people in this world who are supposed to understand us.
what does that say about us?
two things:
either we dont know how to pick our friends.
or
we dont understand what the definition of 'friend' truly is.
YOU have to take some responsibility. when things are going well, YOU take all the credit...conversely, when things are going badly YOU must learn to take some of the blame.
but in our immaturity we expect everyone else to bend. to compromise. to call first. to apologize.
because we are selfish.
most likely because most of us are truly undeserving of good friends.
and like the saying goes, "you can judge a person by the company they keep"....
what that means is; if your friends are shitty people, its because YOU are a shitty person.
because you let it continue, you let them BE shitty, you dont call them on their shit, you skirt over issues and you failed to keep your promises.
so, are you willing to do anything for a friend?
are you willing to compromise?
are you willing to admit your faults and short comings?
are you willing to swallow your pride?
you want real friends?
then BE a real friend.
live up to your away messages.
live up to your journal entries.
live up to your promises.

Well well... today is my birthday :)
